Today’s Devotion: In the Beginning, God

In the Beginning, God
Genesis 1:1-13

📙 Scripture (NIV)

¹ In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
² Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
³ And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
⁴ God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.
⁵ God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.
⁶ And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.”
⁷ So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so.
⁸ God called the vault “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.
⁹ And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so.
¹⁰ God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” And God saw that it was good.
¹¹ Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so.
¹² The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.
¹³ And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.

📝 Reflection

The Greatness of God (1:1–5)
The answer to humanity’s ageless question regarding the origin and purpose of life is given in Scripture with complete clarity. God is the origin of everything and the purpose behind it all. He created the world out of nothing and brings meaning to existence. We get a glimpse of the greatness of our God in the way He created the world. From the infinite expanse of the universe to the smallest components in a living cell, everything exists and functions according to God’s command. The omnipotent God who spoke and made all things by His Word is still the same today. His greatness gives us comfort and assurance that He still sovereignly controls all things no matter how broken the world seems.

How does God bring meaning to your life? Why is it important to understand that God is the origin and purpose of all things?

The Goodness of God (1:6–13)
The opening verses of Genesis reveal that God is not only incomparably great but also incomparably good. Through each step of creation, God takes pleasure in His work. No human being can deny the goodness of the created world, despite its current, fallen state. We all acknowledge that water, land, and plants of all kinds are good and necessary for life on earth. The undeniable goodness of creation points to the infinite goodness of its Creator, which brings great comfort and peace to the believer because even when we face evil and wickedness, we are confident that the one who holds the universe in His hands is perfectly good and works all things for the good of His people.

How do you celebrate God’s goodness in your everyday life? How do you remind yourself of God’s goodness in difficult times?

🙏 Prayer

God, You are great and You are good! I am blessed to know You as my God. Help me to always remember Your goodness and greatness so that I might praise You and make You known. In Jesus’ name, amen.
