FATAL HONOUR

📜📜TEXT:1 SAMUEL 18:12-21📜📜

🔑📖KEY VERSE:”And Saul said to David, Behold my elder daughter Merab, her will I give thee to wife: only be thou valiant for me, and fight the LORD’S battles. For Saul said, Let not mine hand be upon him, but let the hand of the Philistines be upon him” (1 SAMUEL 18:17).

Several centuries before the Greeks wrote their mythology of the Trojan War in which they defeated Troy through a deceitful gift, the Bible had recorded a dramatic episode of the inherent danger of the deception that a godless man is capable of undertaking.

King Saul of Israel had unreasonably sought to kill David simply because the women ascribed to the latter more honour in the routing of Israel’s arch foes, the Philistines. It did not matter to Saul that David had not solicited this adulation. When open attempts to kill the lad failed, the king settled for a seemingly harmless trick of offering his daughter in marriage to David that she might be a snare to him (verse 21).

David fell for the trap as “it pleased David well to be the king’s son in law” (verse 26). Still, the king could not consummate his deadly passion as “Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with him, and was departed from Saul” (verse 12).

How often is the Christian also caught by innocuous worldly set-ups when we do not commit the slightest details of our day-to-day activities to God in prayer! We experience needless suffering as we rush into business, marriage, partnership, rented apartments, etc., without going to God first.

Though God “knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust” (Psalm 103:14). We must not abandon issues of life to guess-work. We must let Jesus have full control of our lives and plans. “Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him, and he shall bring it to pass” (Psalm 37:5).
